"Every cat/kitten is an individual personality for you, the new owner/friend, to learn"

Cat Preparing Your Home

For Your

New Pet Kitten or Cat Friendship

  1. Veterinarian Care and Basic Health Care

Your cat or kitten’s best friend, next to you, is your pet’s veterinarian:

  • Schedule regular checkup visits for your pet cat/kitten – consult your vet regarding your breed of pet cat/kitchen suggestions/requirements
  • Spaying/neutering your new pet cat/kitten may be recommended or mandatory by local authorities
  • There are mandatory vaccinations
  • Ou are constantly watching for flea or parasites infections that may require your veterinarian’s care
  • You must daily observe your pet cat/kittens eating habits, behaviours and use of the litter box
  1. Basic Home Safety Preparation

This home will be your new pet cat/kittens for the foreseeable future – make it a friendly safe place for your new friend:

  • Hide all exposed wires – cats and kittens will chew on these endlessly
  • Toxic plants must be removed
  • All small swallowable objects/items must be removed
  • Put the cat/kitten bed in a safe quiet place – your new pet must feel safe from first day
  • All window and balconies must be securely screened – avoids falling and/or escape
  • Keep doors closed to rooms that you do not want your cat/kitten entering into – introduce these rooms later one at a time

  1. Daily Care for Appropriate Food and Fresh Water

Your pet cat/kitten is totally reliable on your care/attention to food and water:

  • Seek advice from your veterinarian regarding the proper food for your cat/kittens breed/age/current condition
  • Maintain a regular daily feeding time
  • Portion control avoids obesity
  • Use treats sparingly as reward for good behaviour – overfeeding treats cause internal organ issues
  • Clean the water bowl daily and fill with fresh potable/safe/drinkable water
  1. Litter Box Cleanliness

A litter box indoors means that you, the happy owner/friend, are not needed to open a door and let your cat/kitten outside.  This also means that the litter box requires regular cleaning:

  • Cats/kittens are fussy and will not use a soiled litter box – hence you may have an accident on a floor/carpet elsewhere
  • Use fresh clean litter regularly
  • Put the litter box in a safe, quiet and easy-to-reach place in your home
  • It you have more than one cat/kitten it is suggested that you have one litter box for each pet
  1. Cat/Kitten Training and Behaviour

Every cat/kitten is an individual personality for you, the new owner/friend, to learn:

  • Cats like/must be held gently
  • Frightening your cat/kitten may lead to nasty scratches of self-defence
  • A cat/kitten must have a scratching post for claw maintenance
  • Playtime with you is necessary regularly/daily for good cat/kitten social health
  • Pay attention to your cat/kitten and learn your pet’s habits/nuances/wants
  1. Your Cat/Kitten’s Life Enrichment

And Emotional Enjoyment

Cats and kittens have emotions and their emotions are recognizable:

  • Patience is necessary for training and creating acceptable social behaviour
  • Every cat/kitten is an individual personality
  • Cats/kittens like looking out a window
  • Cats/kittens need toys to play with and avoid boredom/apathy
  • Cat/kittens have lives of 10-20 years
