Frog Jumping Contests are real and are still organized in several countries, although they are most common in the United States.

Frog Jumping Contests Rules vary by event, but many contests follow a format similar to the Calaveras competition:

• Each contestant enters one Jumping Frog
• The Jumping Frog starts on a designated starting pad or circle
• The handler – often called a “frog jockey” – may encourage the Jumping Frog to jump by:

1. clapping
2. shouting
3. waving hands
4. gently tapping the ground behind the frog

The frog must never be touched once the jump attempt begins.

1. The official distance is measured over the Jumping Frog’s first three consecutive jumps.

2 If the Jumping Frog’s jumps sideways – the total distance is measured as the Jumping Frog travels

3. Rather than the Jumping Frog in a straight line.
4. The longest combined Jumping Frog’s distance wins
5. Judges supervise every Jumping Frog’s jump.

In major events, each Jumping Frog is allowed only a limited number of competitions jumps to reduce the Jumping Frog’s stress.

 

3. Jumping Frog’s Rules

Vary by Event

The Jumping Frog’s Rules often include:

• Only healthy Jumping Frogs are allowed to compete
• Jumping Frogs are inspected before the competition – to ensure the Jumping Frogs are fit and free of injury
• Jumping Frog Contestants may not physically touch or throw the Jumping Frog once the Jumping Frog is on the starting pad
• Hand clapping – shouting – stomping – waving hats
• Or other non-contact methods may be used to encourage the Jumping Frog to jump
• The Jumping Frog starts inside a marked circle or on a launch pad
• Each Jumping Frog’s is usually given three consecutive jumps.
• The total distance from the starting point to where the Jumping Frog lands after the third jump is measured
• If the Jumping Frog jumps outside the designated course – officials determine the official distance according to event rules
• The longest Jumping Frog’s official distance wins
• Jumping Frog’s Contest Judges make all final decisions

 

3. Animal Welfare Rules

Modern contests generally emphasize humane treatment:

1. Jumping Frogs must never be harmed or forced to jump
2. No chemicals, stimulants, or irritants may be used on the Jumping Frog
3. Jumping Frogs should be handled gently and only briefly
4. Adequate shade – water – appropriate temperatures must be provided
5. Injured or distressed Jumping Frogs are immediately withdrawn from competition.

Many organizers release native wild frogs after the event – where permitted by local wildlife regulations.

 

4. Frog Species Commonly Used

Jumping Frog’s Rules

Depending on local/municipal/regional laws – contests may feature:

• American Bullfrog
• Northern Leopard Frog
• Other locally common native frog species where regulations allow

Some competitions use captive-raised Jumping Frogs – while other competitions allow temporarily collected wild frogs – if permitted by wildlife authorities.
