Showing your pet Dog in a competition show is all about proper preparation.

  1. Pre-Show Preparation

Is the Dog Handler/Owner Responsibility

This list is essential to be completed before entering the show ring:

  1. Your dog is properly registered with show officials
  2. You have received entry confirmation
  3. Judging schedule is handy
  4. Your dog is groomed to breed standards – coats, nails, teeth, ears
  5. Before entering the show ring practise – stacking, gaiting, basic commands required
  6. Make certain that breed-specific gear is handy – chalk, sprays, wraps if necessary

To keep your Dog calm, you the handler must be Prepared, calm and confident.

  1. Show Gear

It is suggested that you have a checklist to follow to assure every necessity is back stage:

  • Show lead – bring a backup lead just in case
  • Travel crate – secure, clean, clearly labeled
  • Crate mat/blanket for comfort and calm
  • Grooming kit – combs, brushes, wipes, sprays, clean towls
  • Water bowl
  • Snacks and treats – rewards
  • Poop bags and non-toxic cleaning supplies
  • Towels/absorbent pads for potential accidents
  • Ring number holder/armband
  • Comfortable chair – shows are long

Being prepared avoids anxiety in the handler that your show Dog may feel and upset the Showing performance.

  • Keep water available
  • Be cautious not to overfeed before showing
  • Regular potty breaks are essential
  • Monitor your show dogs stress signs – panting, whining, pacing, cowering – handle the stress – you know your dog

Dog Shows are competitive, every handler and dog wants to win the trophy, manners in this situation are essential and mandatory.

  1. Always give other handlers and dogs space – avoids competition angst
  2. Be cautious around all crates and grooming tables
  3. Always ask permission before approaching/touching any competition dog
  4. Keep your grooming table calm – no noises, no yelling, no rough play with your dog
  5. Immediately, without hesitation, clean up any mess made by you or your dog
  6. Be polite/us your manners with every one – judges, handlers, dogs, show officials

Impoliteness may get you and your dog banned from future dog shows – be mannerly/polite at all times.

  1. Handler’s Appearance

Be Show Ready

Your appearance is essential to have your Show Dog be featured.

  1. Handler’s attire must be clean and pressed
  2. Handler’s attire must contrast with the Show Dogs coat
  3. Handler’s must wear comfortable close-toe shoes – with good grip
  4. Hair must be neat and clean
  5. No distracting jewellery/accessories
  6. Handler/dog competition number must be visible at all times

It is best to follow the rules rather than spend show time explaining why you are not following the rules.
