Outdoor Safety for Your Pet Dog

Secure Your Yard

Against Escape Thieves and Predators

Before turning your new pet Puppy/Dog loose in the back yard/garden, there a certain safety provisions that must be attended to.

  1. Your Yard Supervision is Necessary

Until Your Pet Puppy/Dog is Comfortable

In This New Play Area

A yard is an exciting new area for your pet dog.

  • Never leave your new pet dog alone in the yard for the first few exposures
  • Take time to learn your new pet’s joy in this new environment
  • You must trust your new pet’s personal behaviour before leaving them alone in the yard

You will be happy watching your puppy friend’s freedom to run, roll and play.

  1. Prevent Jumping/Climbing

Over Protective Fences

All dogs can jump, willingly.

  1. Install a fence at least 6 feet/1.82 meters high. The fence may need to be higher for athletic breeds of dog
  2. It is advisable to install coyotes’ rollers (PVC rolling pipes) at top of fence to prevent your dog or predators
  3. Install inward-facing fence extensions (angled or curved) getting a foothold
  4. Utilize vinyl or solid wood panels for fencing as is impossible to climb
  5. Avid chain-link fencing as our dog may learn to climb this kind of enclosure material
  6. Remove climbing aids such as wood piles, benches, garden chairs, kids ladders away from fencing
  7. Privacy screening is required to prevent your pet dog seeing through chain-link fencing or plastic/glass to begin barking at cars/people/dogs passing.

A secure back yard/garden gives you a more secure feeling with your puppy/dog outside.

  1. Prevent Digging Under Fencing

Dogs are Great Diggers

Livestock panels may be driven into the ground to prevent digging.

  • Burying impediments to digging include burying chicken wire 1-3 feet beneath fencing
  • Mesh can be laid horizontally outward underground called the L-Footer method.

Place hard barriers such as large rocks, pavers or cinder blocks along the base of the fence line.

  1. Protecting Against Predators

Coyotes Raptors Foxes Wolves Bears

Clear the area around the outside of your fence to prevent predators hiding near your yard.

  • Coyote Rollers on top of your fence will prevent predators getting a foot-hold for entry
  • Consider installing lights and sprinkler that are motion activated to scare invaders away.

Consider creating a fully fenced area including overhead fencing to prevent owls or hawks and eagles swooping in and carry your small dog away.

  1. Protecting Your Yard

Against Human Thieves

Dogs are expensive to purchase.  Hence re-sale value of a stolen dog may be worth stealing someone’s pet.

  1. Airlock/Double Gate to prevent your dob scampering away when the first gate is opened
  2. Ensure proper ID by having your pet dog micro-chipped. Always update the chip with current information especially if you have moved
  3. When outside always have your dog’s collar with the appropriate up-to-date dog licence tag attached
  4. Utilize a smart collar with GPS Tracking installed for 24/7 search if you pet gets out
  5. Sign-up with Petrackers.com for emergencies.
