Unlike Alpaca Halter championships, the emphasis is not on the Alpaca’s conformation or fleece quality, but on how well the Alpaca and Handler work together while wearing coordinated, safe costumes.

Alpacas as a Pet
- Most Alpacas Costume Contests competitions require:
- A healthy Costumed Alpaca
- A halter-trained Costumed Alpaca
- A Costumed Alpaca Handler capable of safely controlling the Costumed Alpaca
- Proper Costumed Alpaca registration if required by the show
Compliance with all Local/Federal/Show health requirements is mandatory – disregard for health regulations is immediate dismissal from the contest.
- Many Costumed Alpaca Competition Shows separate:
- Youth and Adult divisions
- Llama and Alpaca divisions
- Individual or Team Costumed Alpaca entries
Some Costumed Alpaca Competition Shows also request a short-written story or explanation of the Costumed Alpaca Theme to be read to the audience while the Costumed Alpaca and Handler enters the ring.

The Alpaca and Handler costumes should:
- Be family-friendly for children and adults
- Fit securely and safely
- Allow the Team Costumed to walk normally
- Leave the Costumed Alpaca eyes unobstructed
- Leave the Costumed Alpaca nose unobstructed
- Leave the Costumed Alpaca mouth unobstructed
- Not interfere with the Costumed Alpaca breathing
- Not interfere with the Costumed Alpaca hearing
- Alpaca Costume must be lightweight
- Alpaca Costume must be easy to remove in an emergency
- Safe Materials Alpaca and Handler costumes:
- Costumes must be secured safely using straps
- Costumes must be secured safely using Velcro
- Straps and Velcro must not entangle the Costumed Alpaca’s legs nor restrict the Costumed Alpaca movement
Alpaca Handlers are often encouraged to wear matching costumes that complement the Costumed Alpaca’s theme.
- No Food nor Treats for Costumed Alpaca:
- Handlers are allowed to use voice and hand commands
- Treats or food lures are strictly prohibited inside the show ring
